Olly's Tooth Story

When his permanent teeth erupted, Olly had full dentition with no congenitally missing teeth. At approximately 18 months of age, we discovered a foreign body impaction between the roots of his lower left 1st premolar.  This was a wooden stick, along with some other unpleasantries, all hidden under a chewed piece of black garbage bag that blew into the dog yard.  (Yes, Labradors eat everything!)

After months of daily cleaning/scaling the affected area and the surrounding teeth, as a Registered Dental Hygienist, I hated to admit that I was facing a losing battle. It was no longer reasonable for me to try and save these teeth or the surrounding bone structure.  The damage was too extensive to say the least, and managing an advancing bone infection was not healthy for the dog.

On March 27th, 2008, we extracted a total of 5 teeth (4 mandibular, 1 maxillary) in the left posterior region of Olly’s mouth. We have pre-surgical photos of the teeth that were removed, and should you see us showing Olly you will notice I carry a letter for the judge (with photos) confirming that his “missing teeth” were removed and not congenitally missing.

We’d be happy to show the photos to you if you’d like to see them. I may even post them some day - just for grins!!!!
